"Pinckney Wrestling Club welcomes boys and girls from Kindergarten through 8th grade. The program is dedicated to teaching beginner and novice wrestling techniques to children in a safe environment where participants are engaged, have fun, and learn the sport. Recognizing the challenges with long term commitment in a sport, the intent of this program is to create a positive experience with less emphasis on competition and more on learning, exercise and enjoying the practice setting. More competitive wrestlers may also choose to participate in optional weekend tournaments, as available through parent volunteer supervision. Pinckney Wrestling Club allows young athletes to build confidence and compete in a friendly atmosphere while meeting new friends. No experience necessary.."
What is club wresting (PYWC) and how does it differ from Middle/ High School wrestling?
The youth wrestling club is for kids from kindergarten through 8th grade. Our youth club program consists of kids that have never wrestling before and kids that have wrestled for a few years. PYWC participates with the MyWay wrestling tournaments which the kids wrestle more as individuals. MyWay tournaments are organized by regions across the state of Michigan. Therefore MyWay tournaments have many kids from many different schools and clubs. Middle and high school wrestling is more of a team setting. They wrestle school vs. school and get a team score at the end.
What should I expect at a youth wrestling practice?
We strive to have each practice be a combination of learning, fun, and discipline. Traditionally practice starts with running a few laps to warm up then stretching. Additionally, we teach techniques and wrestling moves. When appropriate, we divide the wrestlers into two groups based on experience. This is to keep kids on different levels continuously advancing their wrestling skills. Also for new wrestlers this helps make sure they understand the basic wrestling techniques before moving forward. Wrestlers will get moved between the two groups throughout the season on an individual basis depending on how they progress and the particular skills being taught. Please discuss with any coaches if you have any concerns.
Are wrestling shoes required?
No, wrestling shoes are not required. Wrestlers can practice in socks or new tennis shoes that DO NOT get worn outside. The wrestling mats are to only be walked on with wrestling shoes, socks, or new/clean shoes. Kids and coaches are constantly wrestling on the mats therefore they need to stay clean.
Every wrestler is REQUIRED to shower after every practice once they get home. When they shower they MUST use antibacterial soap. Wrestling with other kids on wrestling mats runs a risk of skin bacteria (ring worm, infantigo, etc.) and it is very important the wrestler showers directly after practice. Our youth program prides itself on the fact we have not had any issues in years. We feel it is because we stress the importance of having good hygiene after practice.
TOURNAMENT DIVISIONS- Tournaments have two divisions, Novice and Open. Novice is for new and less experienced wrestlers. Novice division is generally for wrestlers that have wrestled less than two years and are still learning the rules and basic skills of wrestling. Open division is for the more advanced wrestlers that have a few years of experience. If a wrestler excels in the novice division (several 1st place tournaments), you may be asked by the coaches to bump up to the open division. If a wrestler then struggles at the open division for several weeks, they may be eligible to bump back down.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE- Tournaments are always on Sunday’s. Generally, but not always, Novice division is in the morning starting at 9am. Open wrestlers generally wrestle in the afternoons starting at 1pm.
WEIGH IN – All wrestlers must weigh in on Saturday morning before every tournament. If a wrestler does not go to weigh in they will not be able to wrestle in the tournament. No exceptions! We will supply a list of weigh in sites once we are given them from MyWay. In years past the closest wrestling weigh in site has been in Dexter at the Foggy Bottom coffee shop. But again this could change so we will keep you posted.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE- The complete list of tournaments are posted on the
MyWay wrestling website, mywaywrestling.com. We will typically stay within our region
(East Region) as a group. However, you are able to go to any tournament you choose.
We will keep the list of events that the club plans to participate in on the EVENTS page of pinckneyyouthwrestling.com.
THURSDAY REGISTRATION – All wrestlers must be registered by Thursday before Midnight of the tournament. There will be a sign-up sheet at practice once tournaments begin. We ask that you place your child's name, weight and birth year on the sign up sheet if they plan to participate in that week’s tournament. The club will take care of registering the wrestlers for the tournament. If you sign your wrestler up for the tournament and they do not show to the tournament the club gets fined $5.00 per wrestler. So we ask that you only sign up for the tournament if you will be going.
TOURNAMENT COST – Average fee is $15.00. The fee that was paid to our club at the beginning of the season DID NOT include tournament fees. Each wrestler must pay the tournament fee at the time of weigh in. The tournament fees get paid directly to MyWay.
HEALTH/WEIGHT brackets – Tournaments are organized by age and weight. We do NOT encourage “cutting weight” in our wrestling program. We want the kids to be healthy and active. Weight can go up and down throughout the season therefore kids can change brackets throughout the season. The only time a wrestler can’t change brackets is if a child qualifies for the State wrestling tournament. They must weigh in within the same bracket they participated in for the regional tournament.
FOOD/SNACK TABLE - Sunday tournaments can be a very long day for families, wrestlers, and coaches. We will be setting up a table of healthy snacks and drinks for our club. We ask families to contribute to the club snack table if they are able. There is concessions at the tournament however if you have your wrestler, siblings and/or family members coming to the tournament the concessions can get costly.
SINGLETS- The club will pass out singlets to all wrestlers that registered for one at the beginning of the season. They will be passed out prior to our first tournament, which is the first Sunday in December. There was a $20.00 rental fee applied to all wrestlers that registered for a singlet. At the end of the season the singlet MUST be returned to the club. Singlets are typically required for WEIGH IN and TOURNAMENTS. If you did not request one at registration and later need one, we will do our best to find one for your child, however, we can’t guarantee we will have any available.
